Culture and history

Övertorneå as a town is around 500 years old. But there have been people living in Torne Valley for a very long time. One of the earliest settlements has been found in the northern parts of Övertorneå, dating back some 6000 years. Övertorneå has a rich culture with an interesting mix of Sámi, Swedish, Finnish and Norwegian traditions. There are lots of stories from this borderland town – we encourage you to experience it first-hand.

War memory in Vyöni

In the winter of 1716-1717, a band of Russian Cossacks were on a robbery campaign in Torne Valley. After several weeks, they were ambushed by the local defense. The cossacks fell to the last man, about 50 in total. Today you can visit the memory stone of the local heroes that stopped the ravaging robbers outside of the village Vyöni.
